We live in a world where technology is constantly advancing, and where if you don’t have the newest gadget, or you’re not on every social media app available, then you’re not with the times.
But what happens when technology starts to hinder us instead of helping us? Here are some signs you need a break from technology.
You click open and scroll without even being aware you’re doing it.
Do you click through your social media apps without even being fully conscious you’re doing it? Have you found yourself doing the same scrolling over and over again, though you’re not actually getting anything from it?
There are a lot of us who are guilty of this, and social media apps are designed so that you do this! By working on an endlessly scrolling system, it tells our brains that we aren’t finished! This means we never get a sense of contentment or closure from our social media activity, so we constantly need to hit refresh or keep scrolling! Our brains are desperate for the feeling that the task is complete, but it never is.
Consequently, we are wasting our lives mindlessly opening, closing, re-opening, scrolling, scrolling, and scrolling.
If this sounds like you and you find yourself often losing hours to mindless scrolling, then perhaps it’s time to take a break. But remember to delete the apps, because you can click them open so easily out of habit!
You get regular headaches.
If you suffer from regular headaches, and all other possibilities have been excluded, it could be a sign you’re spending too much time on tech. Are you a gamer? Maybe your work is all computer based, so you’re spending your entire day on a computer, followed by scrolling your phone at home? The constant bright light can really play havoc and cause regular headaches, and maybe even migraines if you’re susceptible them!
Try to cut back on tech and see if the regular headaches lessen.
You often miss what people are saying to you.
Does your phone scrolling have you regularly missing what your friends, colleagues or loved ones are saying? This is a massive red flag that your tech use is getting out of hand. If you’re spending more time paying attention to virtual life than real life, you may have a really big issue with tech, and need to cut back your usage, stat!
You’re having trouble sleeping.
If you’re struggling to switch off at night for a peaceful night’s sleep, it may be a sign you’re spending too much time on technology too close to bedtime.
When we use brightly lit screens late in the day, we are messing with our body’s circadian rhythm, essentially telling it that it’s still daytime.
This means our body isn’t ready to calm down for night time, because it doesn’t think it is night time!
Add to that how over stimulated our brain is after we’ve filled it with all the things on social media, emails, research, and anything else on the endless information source known as the internet. It’s no surprise that if you’re glued to technology a lot that you struggle to switch off enough to fall to sleep.
So, what do you think? Are you showing signs that it’s time for you to take a break from tech? Don’t worry if you are. They made technology in a way that was designed for us to need more, and it’s working. But it’s important that we recognise the signs and take a break when we need to.
